Community Health Profile
Approximately 3,000 Connecticut women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. Connecticut also has the second highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States. Komen Connecticut believes it is crucial to fund innovative, community-based breast health programs that provide culturally and linguistically appropriate education, screening and treatment to our local communities. Our grant making process is guided by a Community Profile, which identifies the underserved areas of our state and helps direct our funding priorities.
Conducted every two years, this project researches the breast health services currently available in Connecticut and identifies the gaps in service to our communities. These gaps become our funding priorities for the next two grant making cycles. As a result of our most recent Community Profile, completed in 2011, Komen Connecticut has established the following funding priorities:
- Priority 1: Strengthen and build the capacity of existing breast health providers to identify, provide, and or refer patients to appropriate breast health and breast cancer programs and services in cities and towns demonstrating the highest burden of breast cancer morbidity and mortality.
- Priority 2: Promote breast health awareness and the importance of screening and early detection among women across the state.
- Priority 3: Increase screening resources available to women in selected cities and towns with an emphasis on high risk women, underserved women and selected women under the age of 40.
