Grant Making
Two critical statistics drive Komen Connecticut's work:
- Approximately 3,000 Connecticut women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
- Connecticut has the second highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States.
Komen Connecticut believes it is crucial to fund innovative, community-based breast health programs that provide culturally and linguistically appropriate education, screening and treatment to our local communities. We are dedicated to saving lives and finding the cures for breast cancer. To achieve those goals, our grant making process is guided by the Community Profile of Breast Health in Connecticut, which identifies the underserved areas of our state and helps direct our funding priorities. Decisions regarding the allocation of funds are made by the our local Board of Directors in accordance with these priorities.
Conducted every two years, this comprehensive local project researches the breast health services currently available in Connecticut and identifies the gaps in service to our communities. These gaps become our funding priorities for the next two grant making cycles.
As a result of our most recent report, completed in 2011, Komen Connecticut has established the following funding priorities:
Priority 1: Strengthen and build the capacity of existing breast health providers to identify, provide and/or refer patients to appropriate breast health and breast cancer programs and services in cities and towns demonstrating the highest burden of breast cancer morbidity and mortality.
Priority 2: Promote breast health awareness and the importance of screening and early detection among women across the state.
Priority 3: Increase screening resources available to women in selected cities and towns with an emphasis on high risk women, underserved women and selected women under the age of 40.
Grant recipients for the 2012-2013 grant cycle will be notified in May 2012. Komen Connecticut looks forward to working with these organizations in their efforts to provide the education, screening and treatment that can save lives here in our state.
