GREENWICH FIREFIGHTERS ARE “PROUD TO WEAR PINK” AND RAISE MONEY AND AWARENESS TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER IN CONNECTICUT

GREENWICH – March 24, 2011 – The Greenwich Fire Fighters Local 1042 announces a $1,750 donation to the Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in support of breast cancer research, awareness, education and treatment. The generous contribution comes to the organization after the Department held a t-shirt fundraiser during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this past October.

By exchanging their regular blue duty shirts for pink during their “Proud to Wear Pink” campaign, Greenwich’s career firefighters wanted to be a symbol of hope to the community.

The Department was successful in engaging the community in the local fight against breast cancer and over 1,100 shirts were purchased during the month of October, with support shown by many of the local school sports teams and cheerleading squads.

Proceeds were shared between Komen Connecticut and the Breast Center at Greenwich Hospital.

“It is our hope that this is the first of many” years supporting breast cancer awareness, said Tom Pitasi, a firefighter with the Department. “We are already planning our campaign for 2011 and look forward to Komen Connecticut being a part of it.”

Komen Connecticut invests seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from community fundraisers locally, in education, screening and treatment programs for Connecticut women. The other twenty-five percent supports national research initiatives to help find the cures. Since 1994, Komen for the Cure has invested more than $20 Million in Connecticut-based research, education, screening and treatment programs for breast cancer.
