The focus of the CONNECTICUT AFFILIATE of the SUSAN G. KOMEN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION'S work is to respond to the threat of breast cancer, particularly to the medically underserved that are underinsured or uninsured. The CT Affiliate has raised over $5 million dollars during the past ten years to support national breast cancer research and state grant projects. Currently,
28 nonprofit organizations across Connecticut are being funded with $715,000 in grants.
The primary emphasis is to reduce breast cancer mortality rates in Connecticut by funding creative community based programs. Every two years, the Affiliate does a statewide research program called a Community Profile. This project scientifically collects data statewide on what breast cancer programs are available and what continues to be lacking in Connecticut. Our most recent community profile, completed in 2006, indicated a gap in services in the following areas:
- Special consideration for persons over 65, and disabled persons with impaired mobility
- Financial assistance and the availability of weekend and evening services for low income working
Caucasian females
- More education to increase awareness about the importance of breast health care and to disseminate information about low cost or free services in the community
- Coordination of breast health care through the range of services
- Collaboration of breast health care services to increase availability of services, coordination of treatment and fiscal economy and broader application of grant funding
- Improvement of cultural literacy education for health educators specific to the population for whom services are to be provided
