‘Caring Kids' is a children's support group offered in part by the Looking Forward Program at the Hospital of Saint Raphael , one of the Komen CT Grant Recipients for 2005. This 6 week free group is offered to children of cancer patients and run by two clinical social workers, Rosemary Spinelli-Reyes and Bryna Pauker. Rosemary and Bryna create a safe and supportive environment for the children to learn what cancer is and to be able to express their anxiety, fear and frustration through peer discussions, writing and drawing. When a family is diagnosed with cancer, it may be overwhelmed with taking care of their loved one or the child may be worried that their parent might get upset if they ask questions. In Rosemary and Bryna's clinical experience, they realize that children's fears increase when they don't understand something well. They clearly sense that something is wrong because the whole environment in the home has changed and they don't know why. This safe place of their own allows the kids to ask anything they want to and to express their feelings. The group provides comfort for the children on their cancer journey.
The artwork was created by children who participated in this Spring's Caring Kids group. For information on the group, you may call 203.789.3946 and speak to Rosmary or Bryna who will provide any information you may need regarding this group and other groups for children as well.
